Overview
Recognizing
the long standing need for mitigation solutions in the West, the Mile High
Wetland Bank ("Bank") has been created to meet the environmental
needs of a rapidly expanding and developing Colorado Front Range economy.
As commercial, residential, and industrial development continues to grow,
so will the demand for utility infrastructure, transportation
improvements, drainage/flood control projects, and community development
projects. Unavoidable wetland impacts often result from such growth.
Recognizing the long
standing need for mitigation solutions in the West, the Mile High Wetland Bank
("Bank") has been created to meet the environmental needs of a rapidly expanding
and developing Colorado Front Range economy. As commercial, residential, and industrial
development continues to grow, so will the demand for utility infrastructure,
transportation improvements, drainage/flood control projects, and community development
projects. Unavoidable wetland impacts often result from such growth. The Bank accommodates
the needs of the development community by offering wetland mitigation credits for
purchase. Purchasing credits from the Bank offers the opportunity for meeting project
objectives expeditiously, less expensively, and with greater confidence with respect to
the ultimate outcome of the permitting process.
The 600-acre Bank is situated in the
South Platte River drainage basin roughly 25 miles northeast of downtown Denver. Beebe
Draw, a perennial drainage, flows through the Bank site and provides an important
connection to nearby Barr Lake State Park. The Bank plans to create 170 acres of new
wetland from pasture ground and to enhance another 220 acres of existing wetlands. The new
and improved wetlands will provide a variety of important functions in addition to
critical wildlife habitat. Located a few miles east of the South Platte River, just
northeast of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, and almost immediately downstream of Barr Lake,
the site is situated perfectly to make a synergistic ecological contribution to the
watershed. From habitat for migratory waterfowl, to a nesting site for a pair of young
eagles (we have a roost!), to regional flood attenuation and water quality improvement,
the environmental qualities will be of unequivocal benefit.
The Bank is fully approved and endorsed
by the federal and state regulatory/resource agencies for credit sales offered on the open
market. The Bank is privately owned and operated to provide a turn-key product in the form
of transferable wetland mitigation credits.
